The last foal of Black Caviar's progeny died just two days after the death of the champion runner.

Black Caviar's owners group confirmed that the mare's ninth and final foal had died despite efforts to save it.

The owners are saddened to inform them of the passing of Black Caviar's foal, a foal sired by Snitzel. [on Monday night]”He received 24-hour, world-class veterinary care, but unfortunately he could not be saved,” the statement said.

The owners would like to thank the entire veterinary team who dedicated their time and effort to the care of Black Caviar and her foal.

“The Owners Group would also like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the Australian public and racing fans worldwide for the many tributes they have paid to Black Caviar. She was much loved and admired.”

Black Caviar's death, a day before her 18th birthday, has sparked a wave of tributes to the Peter Moody-trained runner, who won all 25 races in her career, including a thrilling victory at Royal Ascot in front of the late Queen Elizabeth.

She was diagnosed with laminitis, a condition in which blood flow to the hooves is stopped or restricted.

Officials and staff at Hunter Valley Farm, where she spent her post-racing career as a dam, had been trying to save her last foal, which could have been worth millions of dollars as a yearling if sold at auction.

Black Caviar's ownership group did not sell any of their previous offspring and decided to race them.
