PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) – A local leader who was known for his perseverance is being honored.

Henry Chapman, also known as “Chappy” Chapman, was a former WMBD employee who was instrumental in the Peoria Zoo's construction of its Africa exhibit, and he was honored today when the Peoria Zoo named its new navigation kiosk after him.

The kiosk is located at the front of the park and includes a map of the park and upcoming events.

The Peoria Park District says the kiosk is solely intended to honor Chappie, who died in 2022.

“It’s a great way for his family to celebrate him, for his friends to remember him,” said Emily Cahill, executive director of the Peoria Park District. “It also helps us on a daily basis because it gives us the opportunity to get rid of paper maps. It allows us to be more environmentally friendly, all of which are things Chappy is really happy to see.”

Cahill also says the kiosk gives park-goers a chance to take a second to catch their breath and plan their day.
