Bainbridge – At the United States Spirits Rating Competition, held in San Francisco in July 2024, both Paps Coffee Moonshine and Paps Caramel Apple Pie Moonshine won the Silver Medal, a great seal of approval within the spirits industry.
In order to receive this award, Paps had to receive high scores in three different categories – quality, value and packaging – in a tasting competition overseen by a panel of high-level judges.
In contrast to other international spirits competitions, which typically rate spirits based on overall taste or quality alone, the inaugural USA Spirits Ratings competition took into account three different factors: quality, value, and packaging. Quality refers to the overall taste, flavor, and aroma of a spirit. Value refers to the relative pricing of a spirit compared to other spirits. Packaging refers to the overall presentation of a spirit brand, emphasizing how appealing a spirit is to a particular customer segment.
The goal of the USA Spirits Ratings competition is to find, evaluate and award spirits that score well on each of these three key evaluation criteria. The judging panel is comprised of spirits industry experts with extensive commercial purchasing experience.
“This innovative scoring system has been instrumental in identifying world-class spirits that consumers actually want to drink,” says Sid Patel, CEO and founder of event organizer Beverage Trade Network. “We’ve expanded the definition of drinkability, to reflect how spirits drinkers choose the spirits they buy at a retail store or order from a bar menu.”
“We are very pleased that our Coffee Moonshine and Caramel Apple Pie Moonshine performed so well in the USA Spirits Ratings competition,” said Chris Lewis of Paps Hilltop Distillery. “Our goal is to create spirits that will be appreciated by a select group of consumers who are looking for a high-quality spirit. Winning medals is important to us because it shows that we are making the right types of spirits.”
Paps Hilltop Distillery is located at 117 East Main Street, Bainbridge. They have been handcrafting their products in small batches since September 2022. They can be found on Facebook and Instagram.
