It's only been two games, but it looks like things are already in chaos at the Los Angeles Angels.

It's so bad, in fact, that new manager Ron Washington decided to call an emergency team meeting after their 13-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. This was the Angels' second loss to start the 2024 season.

“I just wanted to let them know they've only played two games and we can't get off track,” Washington said. Via ESPN. “Our focus is on a 162-game championship season. Not two games. Both games didn't go the way we wanted, but we just have to make sure we get on the field ready to go.”

While calling a meeting like this is usually reserved for a deeper stretch of the season — considering there are still 160 games and several months remaining — it's easy to see why Washington felt it needed to make this move.

The Angels are off to the worst start imaginable this spring. They fell 11-3 in the season opener to the Orioles on Thursday, then dropped Saturday's game by nine innings. Baltimore scored nine runs in the sixth inning alone before the Angels scored an out as well. They had to pull both starter Griffin Canning and reliever Luis Garcia before they were finally out.

In all, the Angels allowed 24 runs through two games, a new franchise record.

“It's not a good idea,” catcher Logan Ohope said Saturday. via athlete. “We worked hard to make it happen. It's two games, we have 160 games to go. Nobody is pressing the panic button. We are not happy about it in any way.”

Maybe the team meeting was a success. The Angels earned a 4-1 win over Baltimore on Sunday to wrap up the three-game series. Taylor Ward hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Angels on Sunday, then the team made two more runs in the second inning before going the rest of the way.

The Angels will now head to Miami for a three-game series against the Marlins starting Monday afternoon. Their home opener is set for Friday against the Boston Red Sox.

Although there is still time to turn things around, the post-Shohei Ohtani era in Anaheim is not off to a great start at all.
