His journey from prison to luxury football flat spanned the lengths of his career. After being released from a Western Australian prison in 2013, Pickett starred in the Australian Football League, rising through the ranks over the next six seasons to become one of the best players in the state’s top league.

Despite being overlooked in the 2018 draft despite interest from several clubs, Pickett's big break came in the mid-season rookie draft the following season. Out of nowhere, he booked a place in the grand final after a best-on-ground performance in the AFL final.

There were times when Pickett was ready to give up on his dream of playing in the AFL.

“It's been a good journey… I never imagined that I would be selected for the national team. Being selected for the national team in the black and yellow kit is a great honor, and wearing these two kits is even more special,” he said.

“My past and upbringing is different from anyone else’s, and it wasn’t easy to be chosen. I was ignored for six or seven years and in 2019 I was on the verge of giving up on all my dreams.

“There were some people on my side, telling me to keep going… telling me to give it another year.

“Five years felt like ten years… but the sweat, blood and tears were fun, and to do it with a group of guys was really special.

“I'm very proud to be a Richmond man, and I'm going to miss football.”

The Tigers have backed Pickett, who faces trial in Perth over allegations he took part in the theft of more than $380,000 worth of goods in commercial burglaries across Perth in the 2022-23 summer.

He has pleaded not guilty to 12 charges, including theft, criminal damage to property and aggravated burglary.

Coach Adam Yeez praised Beckett.

“With his story and what he was able to bring to our football club, he deserves to be sent off in the right way,” Yeez said.

“His ability to be out with his children one last time will be something we will be really proud of.”
