Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has rejected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's claims that the Israeli leader received no warnings about a planned attack by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, The Jerusalem Post reported Thursday.

“I want to refute the statement that the current government repeatedly makes that the political echelon was somehow unaware that Hamas was not backing down,” Lapid told the newspaper.

“I have already been informed of this,” he said, adding that the intelligence material he had seen “was also seen by the prime minister and the government ministers, of course.”

“It was clear what they wanted.” [Hamas] “He wanted to,” he said.

Lapid said he attended a security briefing on August 21, 2023, with Netanyahu and military adviser Maj. Gen. Avi Gil who warned of Iran's so-called “axis of resistance” – proxy fronts in Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank.

He said he thought the information was “unusual,” but to him Netanyahu “seemed bored and indifferent to the subject and did not comment on it.”

Netanyahu's right-wing conservative Likud party responded to Lapid.

“Yair must be lying again,” the newspaper said, noting that Netanyahu had received no warning at all before October 7, when Hamas invaded Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking about 250 others hostage.
