Key points

Pies keep the season alive.
Collingwood’s title defence came alive in dramatic fashion with a stunning one-point win over the Brisbane Lions. The Magpies once again defied the odds, scoring the last three goals of the game to claim victory. This end of the season has kept A-League fans glued to the live table and today’s match showed exactly why. Collingwood’s hopes of qualifying for the finals are still alive thanks to a late surge. The tide turned when Isaac Quaynor ran over Zac Bailey as he raced towards the Brisbane goal and looked to have settled the game. This was a match reminiscent of last year’s final when it looked like either side could win until the final whistle of last season.

Lions fail to reach fourth place
With four goals from star forward Joe Daniher, the Lions were doing their best to push for a top-four finish. Daniher proved a threat to Collingwood’s defence, and was buoyed by a fine display from Charlie Cameron midway through last season when his goal looked to have avenged the Lions’ loss in the grand final last year. But in the final 10 minutes, the Lions midfielders dropped the ball, leaving the door wide open for Collingwood. Dane Zorko had 26 disposals, Lachie Neale had 22 possessions and Hugh McCluggage had 26, but they were eventually outplayed by Nick Daicos and Steele Sidebottom.

Collingwood Stars Fun
It was the usual suspects who ignited the Black and White Army, and it all started with Nick Daicus’s first goal. Daicus’ second quarter against the Lions featured 14 tackles, three marks and two goals. The impact was felt in the stands as the Magpies fans raised their voices. Among the star-studded line-up, with Steele Sidebottom still on the hook for a contract offer to continue playing next year, he certainly made a compelling case for another season with 26 tackles, 18 kicks and nine tackles. By the end of the game, Daicus had made 25 tackles.
