German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said she wanted to work more closely with France in the fight against Islamist terrorism after a deadly knife attack by a Syrian refugee with suspected links to the Islamic State group in the western German city of Solingen last week.

“These are difficult times for us in Germany at the moment after the terrible terrorist attack in Solingen, which is why I was also moved by the exchange of views with my French colleague on how to confront the terrible acts committed by violent Islamists,” Weiser said during a meeting with French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin in Paris on Wednesday.

“It was important for me that we exchanged views on how we can combat Islamism to a greater extent by working together, but also how we can continue to push back against irregular migration,” Weiser said.

In particular, she said, it was about limiting so-called secondary migration, the movement of refugees between EU member states.

The European Commission must put pressure on Member States that will not accept refugees who have submitted initial asylum applications on their territory.

Berlin says the suspect in the Solingen killings – a 26-year-old Syrian man in pretrial detention – was due to be deported to Bulgaria last year after his asylum application was rejected in Germany. Germany believes Bulgaria was the EU member state responsible for processing his application.
