McGovern did not start training with the rest of his teammates on Friday morning, raising further doubts about his fitness after suffering a hamstring strain against the Eagles, although Voss said he did not need to participate in the entire session to play.

“We're going to give him every opportunity to be able to step up so his schedule is a little bit different from everyone else's,” Voss said.

Defender Adam Saad has been declared a sure-fire starter, just two weeks after suffering a hamstring injury against Hawthorn.

Although such injuries usually require at least three weeks to recover from, Voss insisted the Blues would not risk Saad, who Voss said had a “very low grade” injury.

“If we had made a real effort, we might have been able to do something last week, but obviously we chose not to, given the trip to Perth and another factor,” Voss said.

“He came very close to achieving his goal last week, which gives us a fair amount of confidence that he will be right this week.”

Voss was very confident that small forward Corey Durden would make the lineup despite dislocating his shoulder against the Eagles, but he will need to break through the pain barrier.

“We may have to accept that there is an element of risk, but he seems quite confident,” Voss said.

Voss has tempered expectations that Sam Docherty will return to the finals, after he underwent knee reconstruction surgery after the opening round.

“There are a lot of factors that go into this decision and we’re going to make sure that everyone knows that all of those variables are going to be taken into account very seriously,” Voss said. “It’s not going to be something that we just throw out there.

“He's been part of a long rehabilitation programme and we have to respect that. But all those risks, if you want to call them that, will be managed for him and for the team and we'll go from there.

“As you can imagine, maybe in the next 48 hours, or the next 72 hours, I'm going to be more focused on what's going to happen next week.”
