Beijing banned Twitter in June 2009 — before the site had secured its prominent place in Western media and politics for much of the first decade of the 21st century.
The ban comes two days before the 20th anniversary of the government's crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in the capital's Tiananmen Square.
Since then, many Chinese have turned to local alternatives such as Weibo and WeChat.
Tehran also blocked Twitter in 2009, when a wave of protests erupted following the disputed presidential election in June. However, the network has since been used to relay information to the outside world about opposition movements, including demonstrations against Iran’s crackdown on women’s rights since late 2022.
In the early 2000s, Turkmenistan, an isolated Central Asian country, blocked Twitter along with many other foreign services and websites. Authorities in Ashgabat closely monitor citizens’ use of the Internet, which is provided by the state-owned monopoly Turkmen Telecom.
Pyongyang opened its own Twitter account in 2010 in an attempt to attract foreigners interested in the country. But the app has been blocked along with Facebook, YouTube, gambling and pornography sites since April 2016. Internet access, with the exception of a handful of government sites, is tightly controlled by the government under the reclusive regime, with access restricted to a few top officials.
The X app has been blocked since February 2021, when authorities targeted the app for use by opponents of the military coup that ousted the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, the military junta has maintained a tight grip on internet access in Myanmar.
Some people use VPN to connect to social network X.
Access to Twitter was restricted in 2021 by Moscow, which complained that the site allowed users to post “illegal content.”
The official ban was issued in March 2022, immediately after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russian Users continue to connect to X via VPN services that allow them to bypass the block.
X has been banned since the parliamentary elections in February this year.
The Pakistani government, backed by the military, says the ban is for security reasons. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, now in prison, was the target of widespread fraud allegations against his opposition party that spread across the platform.

The ban remained in place after the 10-day period ended.
The country’s ban on X.com came from the judiciary, via Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. It highlighted the reactivation of accounts that Brazilian courts had ordered suspended.
Users who connect to X via VPN face a fine of 50,000 Brazilian reals ($8,900) per day.
