Morteza Mehrzad Selkjani, the world's second tallest man, had to sleep on the floor while competing in the Paralympics in Paris.
The 246cm athlete, nicknamed the “Deadly Weapon” in his native Iran, had a special bed made for him during the Tokyo Olympics, where he won the gold medal in sitting volleyball.
But this year, Mehrzad Selkajani, who was diagnosed with a developmental disorder at a young age, did not receive such special treatment, his coach said.
In Tokyo [2020]“Yes, they made a special bed, but unfortunately it is not here,” Hadi Rezaegarkani told Olympics.com.[في باريس 2024]“.[atParis2024”HadiRezaeigarkanitoldOlympicscom[atParis2024”HadiRezaeigarkanitoldOlympicscom
“He will lie on the floor. He doesn’t have a special bed, but he has an important goal in mind. He doesn’t care whether he will lie on the floor or whether he won’t get enough food. In any case, he has the mind to become the hero.”
Mehrzad Selakjani – known as Mehrzad – is the tallest Paralympian in history.
The 36-year-old is a key part of Iran's men's volleyball team. The sport is played in a sitting position with only minor modifications to the volleyball rules for able-bodied people.
Mehrzad Selkajani was diagnosed at a young age with acromegaly, a condition that causes the body to produce too much growth hormone. He is one of only three people alive in the world who are 246 cm tall, making them the 17th tallest human being ever recorded.
