According to a New York Times report, some estimates put the whale at about 14 feet long and weighing about 2,700 pounds.
The whale showed signs of domestication, and was comfortable around humans. It remained in more crowded waters than usual for a beluga, raising concerns among scientists, activists and experts.
“He has fully adapted to human culture,” Strand said, adding that it appears Hvaldimir “has been in captivity for most of his life.”
The previous year, Hvaldimir had been spotted off the coast of Sweden, having travelled south, taking him away from food sources and towards more dangerous industrial ports.
Strand and his team have been educating curious residents and tourists about the whale to ensure it is protected as much as possible while it remains outside its usual habitat.
Strand said he was working to strengthen safety measures for Hvaldimir, who has so far enjoyed a quiet year and appeared to be in good health on Friday, based on reports.
“I’m not sure what happened,” Strand said. “But we’ll find out.”
