Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Oleksiy Makeyev urged the government not to hesitate in its support for Ukraine, a German newspaper reported on Sunday.

In an interview with Bild am Sonntag, Makeev stressed that Europe's security depends on Germany's ability and political will to continue playing a leading role in supporting Ukraine.

He expressed his hope that the government would find ways to finance their common security needs and that the Bundestag would speak forcefully and clearly about the 2025 budget.

His comments come after another newspaper report that the German government is not planning to spend any additional money for military support to Ukraine at the moment.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS) report cites a letter from Finance Minister Christian Lindner dated August 5.

The letter, seen by the German Press Agency (dpa), indicates that future support for Ukraine could come from interest on frozen Russian government assets, as decided by the Group of Seven major industrial nations.

On Saturday, a spokesman for the finance ministry said the ministry was prepared to consider providing additional funds in the near term. He said additional needs would have to be communicated concretely and made clear in order to comply with all budgetary regulations, and that the German parliament would seek its approval on that basis.

He said that no specific request regarding the need had yet been submitted to the Ministry of Finance, which meant that it could not be studied or decided upon, and he placed the responsibility on the Ministry of Defense.
