Grisham accused Trump of lacking morals and mocked his supporters off camera, calling them “basement dwellers.” She recounted a pivotal moment after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, revealing that she urged Melania Trump to tweet in favor of peaceful protests. When Melania refused, Grisham decided it was time to step aside.
“I wasn’t just a Trump supporter, I was a true believer in him,” Grisham said during her speech. “I was one of his closest advisers. Behind closed doors, Trump mocks his supporters. He calls them basement dwellers. He has no empathy, no morals, no loyalty to the truth.”
As Grisham described the events of January 6, “I asked Melania if we could at least tweet that peaceful protest is every American’s right, but there is no place for chaos or violence. She responded with one word, ‘No.’” After that exchange, Grisham became the first senior Trump administration official to resign after the Capitol riots.
“I love my country more than my party,” Grisham continued. “Kamala Harris speaks the truth. She respects the American people, and she has my vote.”
Grisham’s speech was a key moment at the convention, as she was one of the few Republicans to speak at the Democratic caucus. Before her remarks, the 48-year-old urged Republican voters to join her in ensuring Trump never returns to the White House. “I never imagined I would be speaking at a Democratic convention,” Grisham said. “But after seeing firsthand who Donald Trump really is, and the threat he poses to our country, I feel a strong desire to speak out.”
