Columbus police announced the arrest of a Columbus man and convicted sex offender Tuesday on charges of possessing sexual material involving minors and failing to register as a sex offender in Franklin County.

According to a news release from Columbus Police, Nicholas A. Anderson, 35, of the city’s southwest side, is accused of possessing and distributing “a large number” of videos and images of young children being sexually abused. Anderson, who previously was convicted of a sex crime in Washington state and ordered to register as a sex offender, did not list his address there or his address or employer here in Franklin County and lived less than a quarter-mile from Stiles Elementary School in the Southwestern City School District, police said.

The Dispatch could not immediately find details of that conviction, including dates or what charges he faces.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed by investigators, police searched for an IP address that was used to download files containing child sexual material between Oct. 8, 2023, and July 21, 2024, and were able to link Anderson as the user of the IP address. Investigators also said that during the interview, Anderson admitted to having child sexual abuse material on a flash drive at his Greener Street home.

Anderson was arrested at his home without incident. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at 9 a.m., according to Franklin County Municipal Court records.
