Courtney Callahar He fondly recalls performing as lead dancer in Sarasota Riverview High's popular Kiltie Band, performing a Scottish jig to the bass drum held by his bandmates under the Friday night lights.

“It was so amazing,” she said. “One of the most important events in my life.”

The 2008 Riverview graduate remembers something else — the rivalry with Manatee High. Not just between John Sprague Rams and Joe Keenan Hurricanes too.

“When I was in Riverview, everyone knew the Sugar ‘Canes,” said Callahar. “What we – the Highland Dancers – were to Sarasota, the Sugar ‘Canes were to Manatee County. They were both teams. They were both teams.”

Sixteen years later, Kalahar is the new director of the sugarcane program, the third in three years, and has made it her mission to restore the standing of the institution as it celebrates its 75th anniversary.D Anniversary September 19-21.

“My goal is to bring back their tradition, bring back the distinction and the elegance. And bring the Sugar ‘Canes back to what they are at their core, what they should be, what they have always been. We’re going to bring them back to their roots. The Sugar ‘Canes are a great team and have always been a great team. So we’re going to focus on Kick and Pom, their core.”

A dancer since childhood, Calahar studied dance at Florida State University, helped coach the Highland Dancers, started a dance studio, and then became manager of the Lakewood Ranch Silver Stars for seven years, leading them to an eighth-place finish at the national championship before stepping aside to start a family.

After a two year break, the itching returned.

“I really missed dance training and knew it would take a special opportunity for me to do it again. So when this opportunity came up, I knew right away that this was the one.”

There are currently 15 Sugar 'Canes and Kalahar, with help from previous Sugar 'Canes. Chloe Kriokotheir number is not expected to exceed 20.

“I would like to grow the team, but I don’t want it to be too big. For me, it’s all about skills. What’s most important to me is building excellence, building a team of high-quality dancers.”

This applies to the 9/11 tests for the Sugar Cane Competition Team.

“I love winning and I want to give them a national title at some point. That's my goal.”
