Linda Sunformer Deputy Chief of Staff of Governor of New York Kathy Hochul was charged Tuesday with acting as an undeclared agent of the Chinese government, federal prosecutors said in a sweeping indictment. Linda held a number of positions in New York state government before rising to the rank of Hochul’s deputy chief of staff. She was arrested Tuesday morning with her husband, Chris Ho, at their $3.5 million Long Island home.
Sun and Hu are expected to make their first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
The 65-page indictment alleges that Linda Sun, 41, denied Taiwanese government representatives access to high-ranking New York state officials at the request of the Chinese government. Linda is accused of altering state government communications on issues involving the Chinese government and attempting to facilitate a trip to China for a high-ranking New York politician, among other things.
He faces charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and misuse of identification, according to reports.
“As alleged, while serving the people of New York as Deputy Chief of Staff of the New York Executive Chamber, the defendant and her husband actually worked to advance the interests of the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party,” said U.S. Attorney Brion Pace. “The illicit scheme enriched the defendant’s family by millions of dollars.”
The FBI searched the couple's $3.5 million Manhasset home in late July, but declined to release further details at the time.
Sun has worked in state government for about 15 years, holding positions in former Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration and eventually becoming Hochul's deputy chief of staff, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Sun and Hu laundered bribes they received from the People's Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party to purchase a $4.1 million home on Long Island.
