The Jacksonville City Council on Tuesday approved contracts for public sewer projects.
In April 2023, the council approved a resolution allowing city staff to apply for a community development grant. The grant money — $500,000 — was intended to be used for two sewer improvement projects to replace existing sewer lines on Sycamore Street, from Highway 79 to Sunset, and at Nichols Green Park, from Corinth to FM 768. The grant requires a city contribution of $75,000.
“These are just some of the areas known to have sanitation challenges in the city,” said City Manager James Hubbard.
The Board approved a contract with Traylor and Associates to provide grant administration services related to the sewer services. The Board also approved a contract with Stokes and Associates to provide engineering services.
The project launch timeline and actual start of construction is scheduled for late 2025 to early 2026.
In a separate matter, the Board approved a contract with Schaumburg & Polk to bid on inspection services in connection with the relocation of U.S. Highway 175 facilities.
The council voted on two nominations for the Lake Advisory Board – Kenya Etim and Ross Gideon. In a 3-2 vote, Kenya Etim was elected to the position.
The Council also approved:
– Extending the contract of the city manager for one year;
– Quarterly financial report, as presented by Finance Director Roxana Briley;
– Jacksonville Economic Development Corporation 2024-25 Budget;
– 5km run on Saturday 2nd November, in coordination with Fostering Bridges to support foster parents and children;
– The Approval Agenda, consisting of previous minutes, the Jingle Jog Trail, the street closure for the annual Trunk or Treat Race on Monday, October 28, and the street closure for the National Night Out Race on Tuesday, October 1.
The Council called a special meeting at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, to discuss the benefits of the Texas Municipal Retirement System.
During the City Manager's report, Hubbard stated that the city expects to see significant construction activity on the Lake Jacksonville Boat Access Grant Project.
“It's a 240 calendar day contract, but it can always be extended due to some weather anomalies, but we're looking to have this project completed by the Memorial Day 2025 timeline,” he said.
He also announced that mitigation efforts were ongoing regarding the removal of eagles in the lake and that the demolition of the former Alberta Street School had been completed.
The All Smiles Business of the Month Award was presented by Shane Pace, President of the Jacksonville Economic Development Corporation. Also presented were recently retired Dr. Larry Foldon and current presenters Dr. Charlie Stokes and Brad Westbrook.
