Vinny's signing comes two days after captain Max Gawn signed a contract extension.

Finney, a father-son draft pick in the 2012 draft, made his AFL debut in 2013. He was best and fairest in 2016, playing 218 games. Finney is determined to get the Devils back into the AFL next season after a turbulent year, the latest concern for Christian Petracca about the program’s professionalism.

Devils list manager Tim Lamb said Vinny was “a player with the heart and soul of our football club”.

“He has been a passionate Melbourne person from the start and to have him commit to the club for another four years is exciting for our players and supporters alike,” Lamb said.

Goodwin spoke about Clarkson's comments about Finney before the Devils' training session on Tuesday.

“Look, that's something I'm not going to do, talk about players from other clubs and where they are and what they're doing from a list management perspective,” Goodwin said.

“But every coach is a little bit different in that area. I think what that shows is the respect people have for Jack Finney and the type of player and person he is.”

Goodwin said he was confident Petracca's issues would be addressed. The Norm Smith Medallist spoke to his teammates on Monday for the first time since it emerged he was considering his future with the Devils. Petracca is under contract until the end of 2029.

“Christian will be at this football club for the next five years,” Goodwin said.

“He has five years left on his contract with the team, and he will be part of the red and blue team.

“Part of this process is to bring a greater and deeper level of understanding to what he has been through, and then move forward together as one.

“This is the plan we have all made… to be fully connected and united as one, and Christian will be at the football club for the next five years.”

The 2021 Norm Smith Medallist suffered a ruptured spleen, punctured lung and four broken ribs due to an accidental knee from Collingwood captain Darcy Moore during the King's Birthday Match in June.

Petracca completed light training at Casey Fields on Tuesday.

Fresh concerns over Carlton injury

Andrew Wu
Carlton face fresh injury concerns over defender Mitch McGovern ahead of their season-deciding clash with St Kilda on Sunday.

While Hawthorn are sweating over the results of a second specialist on star Will Day, the Blues are assessing McGovern with a hamstring problem.

The Blues, who have been plagued by injuries, are yet to determine McGovern's fitness, but they hope he has avoided the injury that could rule him out of the club's final home and away games of the year.

The availability of McGovern, who is a vital part of the Blues' backline with his strong marking and shooting ability, should allow the Blues to continue to rely on Brodie Kemp in attack. Kemp was a revelation for the Blues in their win over the Eagles in Round 23, scoring four goals while replacing Coleman's Charlie Curnow and Harry Mackay.

There is also uncertainty over the fitness of small forwards Corey Durden and Zach Williams, who finished the win against West Coast on the bench.

Durden was substituted after dislocating his shoulder in the third quarter. Such injuries can require extended periods on the sidelines, though it's also not uncommon for football players to play through injuries, as Hawks captain James Cicely did.

The club expressed optimism that Williams' problem was nothing more serious than a muscle cramp.

With only 28 players to choose from against the Eagles, the Blues will have a hard time naming a 26-man squad if McGovern, Durden and Williams are ruled out and none of the 17 players return from the injury list.

Twin Towers Curnow, Mackay, Jack Martin and Adam Saad will all be assessed during the week. The Blues can book a place in the finals with a win over the Saints while defeat would leave them vulnerable to being overtaken by Fremantle, who host Port Adelaide in their 207th and final match of the home and away season on Sunday.

The Hawks are still hopeful that Day can avoid season-ending surgery on his collarbone injury. Although tests showed no fracture, Day suffered a partial dislocation of the area where his collarbone meets his sternum.

He was evaluated by a second specialist on Tuesday morning, and has not been ruled out for the season.

Defender Jack Scrimshaw underwent surgery on his dislocated finger on Monday but the club described the procedure as minor and he is expected to feature in Saturday's match against North Melbourne.

Carlton and Hawthorn are scheduled to release official updates Tuesday afternoon.

Grimes announces retirement

John Peric
Former Richmond captain Dylan Grimes has become the latest player to announce his retirement as the club's premiership era comes to an end.

Veteran Liam Shiels, 33, of North Melbourne, confirmed this is his last year after 16 seasons at two clubs.

Grimes joins the likes of Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin in retiring over the past year, while coach Damien Hardwick has now joined the Gold Coast. Club chief executive Brendon Gill will soon leave his post to take up a role with the league's newest club, the Tasmanian Devils.

Grimes, a beloved figure among his teammates for his hard work on defense during three championships, informed his teammates of his decision on Tuesday. Grimes said he was grateful to the club.

“The club had a lot of reasons to let me go over many years because of surgeries, poor form or whatever. [else]”He said.”

“There’s a part of me that’s been carrying a grudge on my shoulders throughout my career to try to repay the debt I felt I owed to the club. Almost everything good in my life, I’ve had thanks to this club, so thank you.”

Grimes' 234-game career, including just five this year due to a back injury, has seen him named a Jack Dyer Medallist, an All-Australian and a two-time winner of the club's prestigious Francis Burke Award.

He also captained the club in the 2022-23 season, sharing the honour with Toby Nankervis.

“To be a great club you need great people and this place is blessed to have some of the best of the best,” Grimes said.

“I will miss the excitement of this competition, and I will miss the great feeling of playing in front of the best fans in the world… but I leave with no regrets, and I am simply proud of everything we have achieved together.”

Grimes was overlooked in the 2009 National Football League draft, and joined the Tigers with the second pick in the following preseason draft.

Grimes, who suffered serious hamstring problems early in his career, will always be remembered as one of the club's greatest players of all time, Gill said.

“Dylan came to the club through the pre-season project and you could tell straight away he was going to be a player who would get everything out of himself, which has certainly paid off after 15 years,” Gill said.

“His importance to our team and our club over a long period of time has been profound, and his contribution to our era of success has been outstanding. In a role that does not always receive credit, Dylan has been a role model, and he has been respected and admired throughout the league as a top-class player.

“Dylan has had a fantastic career and is one of our most decorated players, but his legacy at the club as a great team-mate will be the most enduring.”

Grimes' departure comes a day after team-mate Shay Bolton said he was open to a move to West Coast or Fremantle, while team-mate Liam Baker could move west. Jack Graham is also considering a move to the west, while defender Daniel Rioli has been linked with a move to the Suns.

Meanwhile, Shiels has spent two seasons at Arden Street, having followed Norths coach Alistair Clarkson after three premierships with the Hawks, and will make his 288th and final appearance against the Hawks on Saturday.

“I have been fortunate enough to do what I love for the past 16 years and I am very grateful for the opportunity to play my final two years at North Melbourne Football Club,” said Shiels, who was selected by the Hawks with the 34th pick in the 2008 national draft.

“I always thought I would play for one club, but I will still be proud to finish my career here. As much as I wish I could have done more to win more, these have been some of the most fulfilling years I have ever had.”
