After the last round of talks on a ceasefire in the Gaza war ended, thousands of people in Israel demonstrated again in favor of reaching a deal on the release of hostages.

The mother of one of the hostages held by Hamas called on the Israeli security services to prevent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from thwarting the agreement, during a public rally, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

The mediating countries, Qatar, Egypt and the United States, hope that the agreement will lead to a ceasefire and the release of the hostages still being held in the Gaza Strip.

“Even if this is not a perfect deal, it is the only deal there is,” the father of one of the hostages was quoted as saying at a rally.

Protests erupted in the coastal city of Tel Aviv, Haifa and many other places across the country.

Many of the protesters accuse Netanyahu of sabotaging the deal and bowing to the demands of his far-right, religious partners in the ruling coalition. They oppose making concessions to Hamas, and Netanyahu depends on them for his political survival.

The demonstrators again demanded the resignation of the government and the holding of new elections.

If new elections are held, Netanyahu could risk losing his position as prime minister. This in turn could speed up the corruption trial of which the prime minister is accused.

Talks mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States failed to make any progress on Friday and were adjourned, but were described as constructive.

Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas regarding a ceasefire in the Gaza war and the release of hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails have been ongoing for months.
