Australian cycling has suffered a major blow as two-time Olympic silver medallist Matthew Richardson has decided to change nationality and compete for Great Britain in international events.

The British-born sprinter competed for Australia at the last Olympics, winning three medals in Paris: silver in both the men's keirin and sprint, plus bronze in the men's team sprint with Matt Glatzer and Lee Hoffman.

Following his success in Paris, Richardson recently discovered that his application to change his nationality to compete in future competitions had been approved by the UCI.

The sprint star said it was a difficult decision and thanked AusCycling, his coaches and teammates for their contribution to his career.

“Changing citizenship was a difficult decision, and one I did not take lightly,” Richardson said.

“I have a huge respect for Australia and the Australian Cycling Team, and they will always be part of my identity. As I begin this new chapter in my life, I would like to sincerely thank the coaches and support staff who have worked with me over the many years in Australia.

“I would like to extend a huge thank you to my teammates for everything we’ve been through together. You’ve been there for me through the good times and the bad, and I’m so grateful for all the support, laughter and hard work we’ve shared.

“I hope you can understand and support me as I continue to give my best in the sport I love.”
